If you've ever owned an RV, you probably experienced the nightmare that is the stock mattress that it came with.
Replacing it with a custom RV mattress is one of the first things most RV owners do after their purchase.
Why custom?
Because most RV bed mattresses are not a traditional size in the sense of it being a king, full, or queen.
Instead, they are made in odd sizes and sometimes even have cut corners.
These differences make buying a replacement a little trickier than just heading to your nearest mattress store and grabbing a matching size.
Regardless, finding camping mattress sizes that fit your rig and getting a custom camper mattress is relatively easy in this day and age of the internet.
A few websites make the process as easy as ordering your food at a fast-food window.
But before you jump in, there are some things you should know and think about.
That's what we cover here on this page.
Considerations When Buying a Custom Mattress For An RV
There are quite a few things you should decide on before you go and buy something that may not fit your needs.
RVs are vehicles (you know, that's why they are called recreational vehicles 😉 ).
And unless you are planning on living in yours full-time, you're likely not going to use it very often.
Therefore, depending on how long you plan to keep the rig, how often you use it, and who will use it, you don't want to get just any custom mattress.
First, figure out what essential features it should come with.
There are a wide variety of types and prices when it comes to custom mattresses for RV use, so keep reading to find out what you need to know before making a purchase.
The Complete Guide To Custom RV And Camper Mattresses
There are many questions to ask yourself before you get a new RV mattress. You may or may not need to go custom.
So before you waste any of your time or money, let's dive into the important things to consider before you buy a new RV custom mattress.
What Is A Custom Mattress?
Well, a custom mattress is one that you can configure in more than one way.
Different websites will allow different ways, but most of the time, you can configure:
- Width
- Depth
- Length
- Materials it's made from
- Level of softness/firmness
- Sometimes, even cut corners (if you need an odd-shaped bed)
Do I Need A Custom Mattress?
You need a custom mattress only if you can't find one on the market that suits your wants and needs.
You also need a custom mattress if you can't find one that fits in the space allowed on your RV mattress platform.
Lastly, you need a customizable mattress if you need it cut or trimmed to fit the shape of the platform (unless you're willing to cut a foam mattress yourself to make it work).
If you find a mattress that fits everything you want in size, comfort level, materials, and cut, then there's no need to go custom.
Custom vs. Customizable vs. Custom-Cut Corners
A custom mattress offers the exact dimensions you need but is not a traditional-sized bed that you would find at a home furnishings store. You most likely will be able to choose the material used (so it can softer or firmer) and possibly how thick it is.
Examples of custom mattresses include a short RV queen or RV king size mattress. Even certain camper bunk bed mattresses fit in this category. In other words, these are beds that are stocked and ready to ship, as opposed to one that requires special/specific dimensions.
A customizable mattress is one where you can choose custom RV mattress sizes (dimensions) and depth and possibly more, including the type of foam used. These are strictly made-to-order beds because they are manufactured to your exact specifications.
A custom RV mattress with cut corner is just as it sounds. It's a mattress ordered to fit the angles, radius, or cutout that you need to match the current mattress or the platform itself. Again, these are made-to-order.
Types Of Custom Mattresses
Even with a recreational vehicle, you can get almost any type of mattress made.
The choice in materials is yours, for the most part.
Luckily, the only choice is no longer just innerspring because foam mattresses have grown so popular.
Here's a quick overview of how materials compare.
They almost all offer different firmness levels.
And with most, you can get high-quality materials, sometimes for additional charges.
Memory Foam
Memory foam has come a long way.
These days, gel memory foam is in favor for the top layer of any foam-based mattress.
It offers a much cooler sleep and doesn't 'mold' you to the position so much like regular memory foam does.
I have a custom RV memory foam mattress from Tochta (the Utopia). It's the most incredible mattress I've ever slept on!
Latex
Latex is a natural material made from the sap of rubber trees. It can be all-natural latex or synthetic blend.
Synthetic blends are more affordable.
Natural latex is chemical-free, though almost ALL foam mattresses have some form of polyurethane foam in one or more of the layers and therefore has chemicals.
Foam
When you see just 'foam' or 'high-density foam' listed in the mattress layers, it is almost always poly-foam or foam made from polyurethane.
Hybrid
A hybrid mattress is one that is made with innerspring as well as some foam.
Many of today's traditional mattresses are hybrids.
Innerspring
You're probably plenty familiar with innerspring mattresses.
They have been around for over one hundred years.
They have come a long way, but you might prefer foam mattresses these days.
Any custom mattress for camper bed replacement will most likely have to be all foam.
Where To Buy A Custom Mattress For RV Use
So, where do these 'unicorn' sized and made mattresses come from?
There are a few fantastic places online where you can get a custom-made camper mattress.
Don't let online ordering scare you off. Most companies offer money-back RV mattress guarantees and ship quickly using FedEx or the like.
That way, you can try it and send it back if you don't like it.
Be aware that there is usually an extra shipping charge for shipping to Alaska or Hawaii.
Here are five companies we like:
1. Tochta
This one is the gold standard for finding the right size and customized feel (they even offer a dual-zone mattress!) for your custom-made RV mattress.
You can do all the sizing and ordering online using their custom RV mattress builder (shown below).
It couldn't be easier to order, and they have stellar customer support to boot.
2. Mattress Insider
Mattress Insider is another top-of-the-line company offering custom-made RV mattresses.
They also have a very similar bed-builder webpage (pictured below), but there are a few cut types you cannot order from them without calling the company.
It's just one more little hassle where Tochta has them beat.
3. Brooklyn Bedding- only house sizes
Brooklyn Bedding offers customizations, but ONLY in regular 'house' mattress sizes.
If you have room for a regular queen or king bed in your RV, then you can happily order from them and custom order the feel, dual sides, pick your comfort layer, coil type, top fabric, and more.
4. Custom Mattress Factory
This company lets you choose your mattress's length, width, and height.
You can also get your custom-made mattress for RV corner cut if that's what you need.
They do hinge mattresses and odd-shaped mattresses as well.
Visit Custom Mattress Factory.
5. Foam By Mail
This company offers different foam types and does offer mattress sizes and custom dimensions and depth.
They offer memory foam, Dunlop latex, and more.
MEASURE TWICE, ORDER ONCE
This cannot be emphasized enough. Nothing worse than ordering a custom-size RV mattress only for it to be wrong AND for it to be your fault!
This is why we recommend measuring the mattress itself AND the RV bed platform.
It doesn't matter if you have a travel trailer or a motorhome, the sleepers on these rigs are sometimes an unusual shape and size, and you must be accurate when sizing.
Measure the length, width, and depth of the mattress and the area it sits on.
Decide if you can get a thicker custom RV foam mattress or if you should stay at the same depth.
How Do I Find Bedding For Custom Mattresses?
There are a few places where you can buy RV fitted sheets made to order.
Some offer pre-sized sheets, and one lets you order a custom sheet size.

Mattress Insider
They offer the more standard-sized sheets and fitted sheets.
They also provide a choice of mattress depth.
Visit Mattress Insider's sheet page.
Tochta
The Tochta mattress company also offers more common-sized sheets and lets you choose depth.
They offer a custom sheet builder option, so you can get just about any size sheet you need.
Visit Tochta's custom sheet builder.
Advanced Bedding
Here you can pick the exact dimensions of the RV sheets you need.
You can also order a custom-size mattress pad and bedspread.
Custom Mattress Factory
Here's one more to pick from.
You can select the length, width, height, and color of your sheets.
You can also order a custom-sized mattress, but you can't do so online. Instead, you must call.
Can You Cut A Memory Foam Mattress?
Yes, you can cut a memory foam mattress! All it takes is a long sharp knife. (A sword would come in handy here, lol! No, really.)
You could easily take that two or one full-sized foam mattress and size it (or them) into an RV bunk size, making new custom cut mattresses!
You can also make the angle or notch you need for a cut corner, cut a mattress topper to put on top of your mattress or make a queen into an RV queen.
The possibilities are endless!
Conclusion
Having the choice to make your own custom foam mattress for RV use is priceless when you need to replace the ridiculous one that came stock in your new RV.
There are a few places where you can get a good quality RV mattress custom-made, and we list some here.
They aren't even that much more expensive than regular-size RV mattresses, so don't be afraid of that.
Just be sure to get something that won't make you dread the nights you spend in your recreational vehicle on vacation!
